Uniting girls against poverty - UGAP

What We Do

Our projects

Our organization is involved in numerous projects focused on empowering girls against poverty.

Poverty remains a significant barrier to education for school-going girls in Africa, leading to high dropout rates, limited academic performance, and restricted future opportunities.

Education

The lack of education opportunities among girls puts them at a risk of marrying and being married before the age of 18. In Uganda, 8.9 million girls aged 10-19 especially those in rural areas and those that lack an education opportunity are at a risk of harmful practices including child marriage.

Health care

Thousands of girls in the rural areas have little or incomplete knowledge and are not prepared and aware of menstruation, lack access to sanitary towels or unable to afford them. Most of them end up using rags, grass, banana fibres to collect their menstrual flow, exchange their bodies for pads and miss school during their periods which affects their academic performance.

gender

Some effective ways to promote gender equality are;

  1. Tackle stereotypes about gender roles in families and the society.
  2. Educating the girls and women about inequality and feminism.
  3. Support women’s leadership and empowerment.
  4. Encourage financial inclusion and support women-owned businesses.
entrepreneurship

UGAP believes that entrepreneurship helps in improving the standard of living of the people and wealth creation, which in turn boosts the national income and tax revenue.
